Sport News: Andre Woodson and the Wildcats became the latest team to shake up the national title race this season, but the first team in nearly four year to take down the top-ranked team in the regular season, beating the Tigers 43-37 in triple overtime Saturday.

Woodson found Steve Johnson open in the end zone for a 7-yard score in the third extra period. The 2-point conversion, required after two overtimes, failed but it didn’t matter.

With a chance to win it, LSU couldn’t get a first down on four straight running plays. Charles Scott was stopped a yard short on fourth-and-2 and No. 17 Kentucky had it’s first victory over a No. 1 team since 1964, when it beat Mississippi.

“It proved we’re a team that obviously earns a lot more respect now,” Woodson said in the middle of the on-field celebration. “We’ve come a long way from being a doormat in the SEC to competing with the best teams in the SEC and getting some wins.”

No highly ranked team seems to be safe in this season of surprises. It started with Appalachian State knocking off then-No. 5 Michigan in Week 1. In the last two weeks, nine teams ranked in the top 10 have lost, including No. 2 USC falling 24-23 to Stanford last week.

No. 1 had been safe though, until now.

The last No. 1 team beaten during the regular season happened Dec. 6, 2003 when Kansas State upset top-ranked Oklahoma 35-7 for the Big 12 title.

Another group of Wildcats pulled it off this time, led a Heisman Trophy contender at quarterback.

Woodson wasn’t sharp early but completed 21 of 38 passes for 250 yards, throwing for three TDs and running in another. He largely had to carry the load with top rusher Rafael Little sidelined with a bruised thigh.

On the final touchdown, Johnson was wide open because defender Jonathan Zenon tripped and fell down. Woodson double-pumped before firing a strike.

“Whenever it starts to look dark, that’s when they dig down and find something extra,” Kentucky coach Rich Brooks said.

LSU became No. 1 two weeks ago for the first time since 1959. In its first game as the No. 1 team in 48 years, LSU escaped with a 28-24 win over Florida last week when Jacob Hester scored on a 2-yard run with less than a minute left.

This week, LSU couldn’t escape and it looks like the Tigers’ stay atop the rankings will be a short one.

The first Bowl Championship Series standings come out Sunday.

Fans at Commonwealth Stadium stormed the field, in a scene reminiscent of 2002, the last time these teams played in Lexington. Only that time, it was a false alarm because Devery Henderson scored on a 75-yard tipped pass as time expired in what is still known in Baton Rouge as the “Bluegrass Miracle.”

Early on Saturday, it didn’t seem like this game was heading to a miracle finish. It didn’t seem like the Tigers would need one.

But starting with a minute left in the third quarter, Kentucky scored 13 straight points to tie it at 27. Both teams scored rushing TDs in the first OT and field goals in the second.

Woodson, who earlier this season broke Trent Dilfer’s major college record of 271 consecutive passes without an interception, had two picked off Saturday.

The Wildcats took an early 7-0 lead after Woodson’s tipped, wobbly pass was grabbed in the end zone by T.C. Drake.

The Tigers didn’t wait long to answer. Two long runs — 27 yards from Trindon Holliday and 55 yards from Scott — set up Scott’s first TD, a 1-yard plunge, to tie the game at 7. The Tigers tacked on another TD by Scott, from 13 yards out, late in the first half.

Kentucky closed the deficit to 17-14 at halftime when Woodson found Steve Johnson on a 50-yard post, then scrambled 12 yards untouched into the end zone.

Until late in the game, Kentucky did little against LSU’s top ranked defense, which had allowed fewer than 200 yards a game.

Although running is a physical activity that can help you strengthen your legs and cardiovascular health, running is much, much more than that. Running can actually help you build your self-esteem, willpower, concentration and focus.

For beginners
If you’re just beginning, you may consider it a huge accomplishment to be able to focus enough to make it to the end of your street without stopping. But what you will find as you are physically able to run for greater lengths of time is that you no longer have to focus on the physical aspects of running, but rather, running itself. You will wonder why you are running so far, how you will feel at the end and best of all, how far can you possibly go?

As your distance increases, you will find yourself thinking more and more positive thoughts about running. It’s no longer about the running, but about achieving goals, improving yourself and pushing yourself beyond where you ever thought you could go. This transformation will seep into all aspects of your day-to-day life, making you a more positive person ready to take on any challenge that presents itself to you.

For seasoned runners
As a seasoned runner, you are already fully aware of the benefits of running longer distances and the concentration it requires to go the distance. However, the beauty of running is that there is always a new goal to accomplish. You may be ready to set a new personal record, whether it be for a 5k, 10k or any other length race. You can build on your base of focus and concentration to push yourself to run just a little faster, or add speed at various points during your training runs to eventually increase your overall pace.

Practicing your running skills off the course
The focus you learn on the running course can be taken and applied throughout your life, whether it is at work, school or in day-to-day activities. For example you may use the focus you have learned at work to complete a particularly daunting project. Or you may use your self-esteem building skills to encourage coworkers.

To help yourself achieve more focus both on and off the course choose an activity that makes you focus on something you wouldn’t normally focus on. Pick a nice grassy spot and lie down and analyze the clouds in the sky, making sure to note every puff, curve and their movement. If it is a clear day, you could pay close attention to the blades of grass, mentally noting every vein, color variation and size difference among the blades. This type of activity also works great if you study the bottoms of your running shoes. Whatever you choose, study it until you know it better than the back of your hand – or at least 15 minutes. Although this activity may seem rudimentary, it can actually help you become a more focused person and better able to concentrate on whatever it is you need to do. Life is not a bicycle and it requires practice such as this to hone and perfect your vital life skills like focus and concentration.

Getting started with an exercise program can be confusing, especially if you’ve never exercised on a regular basis before. Whatever your goal is, just remember to start out at a comfortable pace and increase your amount of beginners exercise as tolerated to increase strength and endurance. You’ll be fit in no time if you stick to your guns and stay motivated. However, if it’s been a long time since you’ve exercised regularly, if you’ve been sedentary for over a year, if you’re pregnant, have diabetes, if you have any type of chronic health condition, like heart problems or high blood pressure, if you’re over the age of sixty-five and don’t currently exercise, if you’ve ever experienced chest pains, dizziness, or fainting spells, or if you’re recovering from an illness or injury, or if you’ve been diagnosed with any other medical condition or even if you haven’t, you should get a full check up from your healthcare provider and get a medical release before staring any type of beginners exercise program.

Before you start your beginner’s workout, get some good fitting shoes that are designed for whatever type of beginners exercise you’ll be doing, whether it’s walking, weight lifting, cross training, or playing basketball. Choose comfortable workout attire too, remember, think comfort, and wear whatever feels good to you. If you’re exercising outdoors, don’t forget to wear a hat and light colored clothing, in addition to sunscreen and sunglasses. Now you’re ready to set your weight loss and fitness goals. Make sure that your goals are realistic and attainable, and reward yourself when you reach your goal. It’s reasonable to lose one to two pounds per week, and you shouldn’t get discouraged if you hit a plateau. The less the body weighs, the fewer the amount of calories burned just moving around, so the more weight you lose the harder it will be to continue losing more.

Remember that the scale isn’t the only way to track the progress from your beginners workout. It can be quite discouraging to exercise for a long time and still weigh the same, when in fact; the body is gaining muscle and losing fat. To stay focused and motivated, track body fat percentage in addition to weighing on the scale to get a better idea of how much weight you really need to lose. And don’t be obsessed with either one. Check out your clothes fit and feel too; how you look is also a good indicator of how your beginners exercise program is working. Take measurements also to reassure you that you really are getting into shape, even if you can’t yet see it everywhere. Make a plan and stick to it to get the best results. Your progress will be slow but steady, and you’re apt to keep the weight off if you take it off slow. Good Luck!
